1988 Topps Baseball Cards – Best 10 Cards, Checklist, Value

While the 1988 Topps Baseball set isn’t the most popular release by any means, there are a few notable exceptions to the rule.

The set is reliant on great images, and each of the cards has been given a basic 3D effect of some kind.

We’re focusing on 10 of the best 1988 Topps Baseball cards, along with investment advice if you’re tempted by any of the Hall of Famers, or possibly even an RC or two.

10 Greatest 1988 Topps Baseball Cards

There are 792 cards in total, with subsets including Future Stars, Topps All-Star Rookies, Record Breakers, Turn Back The Clock, All-Stars, Team Leaders, Checklists, and Managers.

Topps Tiffany is a rarer option released in tandem with many sets from the Junk Wax Era. Between 1984 and 1991 Topps made a relatively limited number of factory sets that came with better production values, including the 1988 Topps Baseball set.

It’s worth looking out for the Topps Tiffany version of a card, although the set came with a print run of 25,000 copies, so it’s still reasonably plentiful.

The best cards from the 1988 Topps release contain some of the greatest players from the era. We’ll begin with a rookie card which is one of the most valuable options.

1988 Cal Ripken Jr. Topps #650

1988 Cal Ripken Jr. Topps #650

Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. spent his two-decade-long career with the team and is always valued highly by fans and collectors. His ‘88 Topps card features a great image of Ripken Jr. at the plate, and it’s an affordable piece compared to earlier releases.

Even PSA 10 graded versions are cheaper than you might expect, coming in at the low three-figure range.

1988 Mark McGwire Topps #650

Another star from the era, Mark McGwire is best known for breaking the Roger Maris single-season home run record in 1998. His ‘88 card features a profile shot of the player, with his trusty bat in hand. McGwire is also the subject of an ESPN documentary that also features Sammy Sosa that is set to drop June 14 entitled “Long Gone Summer”.

For more valuable options, we’d look to any of his ‘87 cards or even one of the earlier pieces such as his 1985 RC.

1988 Tom Glavine Topps RC #779

On the subject of rookie cards, Tom Glavine is another Hall of Famer in the 1988 Topps set, and it also happens to be his RC. Along with Brett Hull, they have to be seen as the most collectible cards from the set.

It features a profile photo of the player, with both of his hands clasped in his glove.

As always, we’d lookout for the Topps Tiffany version. You’ll be able to identify it via the glossy coating on the front, or by looking at the number of stars on the back of the card.

1988 Roberto Alomar Topps Traded RC #4T

Roberto Alomar is a 12-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, and the first Hall of Fame member to be depicted as a Blue Jays player on his plaque. His RC is found in the 1988 set, featuring a simple shot of the player with a bat in hand.

There’s been a recent uptick in prices, and Alomar looks to be one of the safer bets from the 1988 collection from an investment perspective.

1988 Greg Maddux Topps #361

Greg Maddux is best known for his time with the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs, winning the 1995 World Series with the former, while being an eight-time All-Star over three different decades (1988-2000). His ‘88 card is worth a fraction of the price of his 1987 RC, or his ‘93 Finest refractor.

However, if you’re on the lookout for an earlier, more affordable option, this could very well be it.

1988 Mike Schmidt Topps #600

Mike Schmidt is a retired Philadelphia Phillies legend who was a 12-time All-Star and a three-time winner of the National League MVP award. His RCs are some of the best from the era, but the same can’t be said for his ‘88 release.

It features an image of Schmidt in a batting pose, but it looks more like a golf card considering his thick jumper and the green Phillies background.

1988 Nolan Ryan Topps #250

Next up is a card from Nolan Ryan’s final year with the Astros. Ryan needs no introduction, from laying the smackdown in his later years, to have played in the MLB in four different decades.

His ‘88 Topps release is the most affordable option to make the list by a fair margin, and one of Ryan’s cheapest cards overall.

1988 Bo Jackson Topps #750

The ever-popular Bo Jackson remains the only professional athlete in history to be named an All-Star in both baseball and football. His card from the ‘88 set features an action shot of the player on the plate, and gem mint Topps Tiffany versions can be picked up for roughly $30.

1988 Don Mattingly Topps Tiffany #300

Despite his sideburns, Don Mattingly rounds out the list. ‘The Hit Man’ spent his entire 14-year career playing with the New York Yankees and picked up an AL MVP award and six All-Star appearances.

Mattingly’s card currently hovers in the low three-figure range, making for another interesting investment option.

1988 Jose Uribe Topps #302

As opposed to the 10 cards discussed above, you might see Jose Uribe’s card selling for an exceptionally high price, almost inexplicably so. One suggestion has been that it’s a form of money laundering, which is as good an explanation as any.

To his credit, Uribe was a good player, even if he couldn’t match up to the level of competition seen above.

1988 Topps Baseball Cards: Buyers Rating and Investment Outlook

The 1988 Topps set is packed full of the greatest players from the era, even if their cards aren’t worth much in the grand scheme of things. For more valuable options, look to Tiffany versions of the RCs, while we’d advise solely stick to PSA-graded versions for the best possible prices.

“As with almost every set from the era, 1988 Topps Baseball cards were overproduced, but there aren’t as many gem mint copies as you might expect.”

From an investment perspective, there’s something to suit almost every budget, although it’s unlikely that prices will rise much over the next year or so. It’s best seen as a long-term investment option, although you would probably see a better ROI elsewhere.
